Ilves 3-0 Tappara – Daniel Paille debut.
What a game!! At last we beat Tappara this season, not only that but a shut-out, amazing. With Pelicans losing tonight away in Turku Ilves are now just 2 points behind the 13th placed team with 2 games in hand. 15 points off the play-off chase, but we aren’t done yet.
We started the game giving away cheap penalties which eventually should have given Tappara the lead when they were given a penalty shot, Aleksander Barkov the free scoring young talent took a slow build up and then didn’t really try anything, Lindbäck easilly just picking the puck up. Tappara ended the period taking a couple of penalties too but it was goal-less at the break.
The second period started perfectly, Ilves putting the pressure on Tappara in their zone and our leading point scorer Matias Sointu (Korhonen) pushed a back handed shot through the legs of Juha Metsola to give us the lead, it was the only goal in the second period, there were three Stanley Cup winners in the derby game today, Max Talbot and Daniel Paille for Ilves and Ville Nieminen for Tappara.
Two and a half minutes into the final period and Metsola is under pressure again and makes a mistake which then got the whole Tappara defence in trouble when the puck came out to the on rushing Erkki Rajamäki who bundled the puck through all the bodies into the net, the video referee judged the goal to be good and the home side went 2-0 up!
Tappara had more powerplay chances but Lindbäck had a fantastic game and just kept picking pucks out of the air. The final goal came short handed when on his debut Daniel Paille of the Boston Bruins powerfully slammed the puck into the net whilst Tappara had Metsola on the bench, a fantastic win against what is a very good Tappara team, but on this day we were far better!
With TPS beating Pelicans 5-2 we are now 2 points behind them and looking like getting better and better. Our next game is Friday in Kuopio against KalPa, never an easy place to go and get points, anything we can pick up will be a bonus, we’ve two games in hand over Pelicans so picking up as many points as we can will really help us.
We have now gone 123 minutes exactly since we last let in a goal, 2 shut-outs in a row. Our big problem recently had been our defence but things have gotten a lot better, we’ve got such a lift now with Paille, Talbot and Lindbäck at the club.
Lindbäck went 11+10+16=37 on saves today.
