KalPa 3-5 Ilves
The best comeback I’ve witnessed in the last few years, an amazing three points away from home against the team who were joint top of the league.
KalPa started the game with Sami Kapanen playing along side his son Kasperi and the home side started well with Antti Kerälä scoring passed Kolppanen early on. The lead was doubled when Sami Kapanen skated passed a couple of players, passed on the blue line to Salminen who assisted Jukka Voutilainen who scored a well worked and well deserved goal, 2-0 after 20 minutes.
The second period started disastrously Ilves getting mixed up in defence and captain Sami Kapanen taking the puck, doing a spin move before putting it in the net, it looked like it was all over and another loss for Ilves, but at 25:13 an inspired goal came when we were shorthanded, Keränen working really hard to win the puck around the back of the KalPa net with no one else around him apart from Välimaa who in front of goal passed it back to Michael Keränen who got us back into the game, 3-1.
Perfect start in the third period, dead on 41 minutes, Lassi Kokkala going passed three men short handed before cooly putting it passed Koskinen, another great shorthanded Ilves goal, we’re back in the game. A few minutes go by and Ilves are straight back in it, Järventie and Huhtala assisting Mikael Kuronen on a fantastic equalising goal.
Looks like we are going to earn a point with just a minute left of the game, until Antti Kangasniemi scores the goal of the game, Ilves break forward 2 on 4 and Kangasniemi goes passed a couple of players, around the back of the net and backhands it around the pipe passed the goalie, 3-4 and Ilves look like we’re going to take all 3 points. KalPa then take Koskinen out of goal for the extra attacker and at 59:59 Ville Korhonen scores from just passed the half way line into the open net, 3-5 a perfect comeback!
I’ve only been to Kuopio once with Ilves and we lost 3-0, probably the worst I’ve ever seen Ilves play, and the loooong bus trip mad being shut-out even more frustrating, but today was the complete opposite, to be 3-0 down after 21 minutes then score 2 shorthanded goals and a further 3 goals after that showed more fight that I’ve seen this season, all without any NHL stars and without Koistinen, Kantola, Niinimäki.. we couldn’t even field a complete 4th line today, proudest result in a long time, let’s keep the momentum up.
